Tokyo DisneySea Version

The Tokyo Tower of Terror is a popular and thrilling attraction located at Tokyo DisneySea, part of the Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan. Unlike its counterparts in other Disney parks, Tokyo’s version of the ride features a unique storyline that’s completely original and not based on The Twilight Zone.

The Storyline

Set in 1912, the ride revolves around the Hotel Hightower, a luxurious New York hotel owned by the eccentric and wealthy explorer Harrison Hightower III. Known for his global travels and questionable methods of artifact collection, Hightower’s fate turns grim when he brings back a mysterious idol named Shiriki Utundu from Africa. During a press conference celebrating his return, Hightower disappears under strange circumstances after mocking the idol—his elevator plummeting down the shaft with no explanation.

The hotel was closed following the incident and has since become the focus of investigations by the fictional “New York City Preservation Society.” Guests are invited on a tour of the haunted hotel to learn the truth behind Hightower’s mysterious vanishing.

The Ride Experience

Riders enter the elaborately themed hotel and proceed through the lavish lobby and private study filled with exotic artifacts. After a chilling pre-show that explains the backstory through a magically animated Shiriki Utundu, guests board an old-fashioned service elevator. The ride then launches into a series of sudden drops and rises, simulating a supernatural plummet through the tower, accompanied by ghostly effects and eerie visuals.

What Makes It Unique

  • Original Story: Completely detached from the Twilight Zone IP, with a fresh, immersive narrative.
  • Cultural Detail: Deep theming based on early 20th-century New York with strong influences from Western architecture and Art Nouveau.
  • Shiriki Utundu: A memorable and creepy character that adds a layer of supernatural intrigue.

The Tokyo Tower of Terror stands out as a fan-favorite thanks to its compelling storyline, detailed set design, and exciting ride mechanics — making it a must-ride for any Disney park enthusiast.
